I think books/movies like Lord of the Rings play a role in why rangers are so popular. Elves seem to be the most popular characters in fantasy titles, and most of them are archers.

I chose a Ranger because I've always liked that class, in Diablo, Sacred and other games I've always played an archer of some kind. I also like fighting outside of the melee where I can see what needs to be done.
But all that being said, I also think the Rangers are the best looking characters in the game! Those male rangers are hot!

Same here, I've played Rangers since the old D&D pen and paper games, that and thieves, but since there aren't any thieves in this game, Ranger is my choice. I don't know anything about what Expertise does, I never cared much for details. Heheh. If it helps me with my spellcasting, that's all the better. Next month, I'll put some points into that, since I've had some problems with not having enough energy to cast the spells I want. I've just been putting my points into the things that sounded like they were more directly related to Rangers, like Beast Mastery, and Bow related stuff. I do think Rangers should get movement bonuses from being more in tune with the land, but that's just me being nostalgic. Heheh.

Can also be changed around to "Those female rangers are hot!"
Before i started studying GW I saw this pic
http://www.guildwars.com/images/JPG/...een032-lrg.jpg
And then thats when i said to myself, im gonna give it a shot!
So i came to this site and studied the professions and the ranger seemed most fitting for me.
Not to mention that video with the ranger dancing.
So i know for sure im going to be a primary ranger, im unsure about my second proffesion.

simply put.... versatility. Jack of all trades says it all..there is always some way for them to manage something akin to a different character. (not always well, but its there)
The other interesting thing about rangers is, unless an opposing ranger is in your screen, you may not realize who is beating on you until you are in trouble( melee or someone a lil too busy casting..hehe)
Shooting into a melee engagement is rather interesting. A lot of times people will just not realize some of those big chuynks coming out aren't clubbings.
(yeah I know..they catch on fast..but depends who you are..and how much you play)

I fink....
The ranger does have some pretty heavy versatility, but I would have thought most people would have gone for a warrior or elementalist: a good reliable well-used class. But then I, a Elementalist-warrior was rather surprisedat these hordes of archrs running about...

Rrrgibblybarg! I had an actual, semi-coherent reply to this, but got hit by a power outage. Northern Electric and Gas hates Guild Wars. Both Warrior and Elementalist primaries have some pretty glaring problems, in my opinion. Strength is a solid attribute, although even at high levels the AL penetration is negligable, and for the most part serves to do bugger-all when going for lightly-armoured targets. Strength has some decent skills tied to it, and Strength shields are available, but nothing spectacular. The Warrior's greatest problem as a primary comes from Energy management. Twenty maximum energy, only two pips of regen. From what I keep hearing ingame, Warriors are seen as the no-brainer meat and potatoes class, but anyone who can work with such a bloody abysmal energy pool has my utmost respect.
Energy Storage is a fantastic skill, for the very beginning of a fight. Once your Energy levels hit zero, through natural draining of Energy or denial by Mesmers, the maximum doesn't matter at all. All that matters is how long you have to wait before you can fire off your next Energy-based skill. And in my opinion, that's where Elementalists are shite. Huge energy cost for skills effectively means that once you hit zero, you're ballsed, and Energy Storage isn't helping any. At least Soul Reaping and Expertise have potential in a zero-Energy situation, and all the other primary attributes can't be rendered useless as easily as Energy Storage. Toss in the typical mages' bad armour, and I can certainly see why I rarely see Elementalists. I even run across more Necromancers than Elementalists, oy vey.

At the start of any battle, Energy Storage is the most useful attribute in the game. Half a minute into the battle, Energy Storage is the most useless attribute in the game.

I might get some flaming for this one...
People that play rangers usually have an easy life. This is for a standard pick up team in the Tombs.
1. They are usually never target callers
2. They never lead in battle
3. They are never the dedicated ressers
4. The never have to heal others, and therefore no responsibilty for the groups well beeing.
5. They enjoy an easy life untill the healers are dead - then they tend to get some heat.
6. They never get any heat for anything they do.
I am so tired of leading as a Warrior, calling targets and then ressing when players die. Players usually never follow up on your targets as well. It seems that follow your leader doesnt apply much and you get frustrated when you are the only one standing. You wonder time and time again if you should have chosen another strategy.
As a monk in PvP I work my butt of to keep players alive, and most of the time I end up ressing at times too. Players spread out and make my life living hell. The whole team is depending on you to keep the healing going. Yet, when you are attacked no help is available, but you don't want to jepoardize your healing ability, by bringing stances and defensive power.
Playing Warrior or Monk in Pick up groups in the Tombs is frustrating. So maybe I should give myself a break and start a Ranger or join a decent guild. I believe the expectations are going to be a lot less and all I have to do in those group is to stay somewhere in the middle and fire my arrows and set my traps.
Sounds like a great idea.

Not true. A warrior can have more than that with armor and foci. It's just a base amount, which is the same for all professions.
In response to ratatass, how much a player puts into a pickup group depends on their build and their enthusiasm, not their primary class. The four primary classes I play the most are Ranger, Warrior, Monk and Elementalist, and out of the four I can honestly say Monk is the only one that requires any more work than the rest. Let's face it, keeping people alive is harder than causing damage.
As for you being tired of ressing when players die, that must be because you are a /Mo, not a Wa/. Anyone with a secondary of a monk and the res spell has to go through that. And the reason the warrior calls is it is a lot easier for ranged attackers to switch targets than a warrior. A warrior has to physically go to that person. One of the best plans is to switch constantly, and you're not going to want a warrior running around wastefully while a ranger or elementalist call the targets. With the warrior targeting, he/she will find the best target nearby that will be quick to reach, providing less down time of running. (my opinion from playing a warrior)
I agree one of the biggest problems is players don't follow the targets. Even other warriors don't follow targets and just go off on their own. It gets annoying.
If you really think Rangers are "lazy" or "slow", then that's a reflection on the player and not the profession. Saying they "just fire arrows" is like saying warriors "just slash or smash things". If this was true, we wouldn't have any need for skills. I don't think any profession is really "more or less hard working" than the next, because it's our builds and skills that determine how much we are putting into the game.
And no this is not a flame. Just a post to show my view that we are what make a profession "suck" or "great".

Well... as battle goes...
Monk = first to go
then the other casters... as for easier target to be taken down (or so they thought)
then the closest target... the warrior that is whacking you @_@
then who is left? oh that ranger at the back...
Something I had been wanting to test is... If I wear an elementalist armor and use a bow from the farthest corner... will people come all the way to get me just because I am an E or something...? Not many chance to do this yet thou... As I am looking for a good bow =P

Yeah later you can use it to attract attention.
Is that bow like a medium ranged weapon? Or is it like the uber elite hacker weapon?
